What is Network Security? | Types & Functionality

Are industrial enterprises ready for XaaS?

As previously stated in Enterprise IoT Insights

Industry organizations are beginning to be wary of XaaS offerings for their operational computing. However, there are certain concerns that prevent many from taking action. Organizations need to ask themselves: How will this affect their work? How will this change your budgeting process? change is not always considered good in the OT world. There are several important considerations for industry organizations looking to leverage XaaS.

First, the OT infrastructure may not be XaaS ready. Connectivity and tight security are often well established in the datacenter, making it easy to connect to SaaS offerings. But in the TA world, this may not be the case. Upgrading the network infrastructure to provide secure, high-performance connectivity for XaaS services can involve installing gateways and / or custom software, which can be costly and time consuming.

Another challenge is the ongoing investment required for XaaS. A typical example is an organization that collects data at the edge of the operating room to upload it to the cloud for analytics. However, making the most of such analytics requires specialized skills that many OT organizations lack. In addition, depending on the size of your OT infrastructure, the amount of data generated can be enormous, requiring a large amount of expensive “leased” capacity.
